Description

This extension can be used to search for selected text using the context menu. Different search engines can be added according to the user's wish to the right-click menu. The search results are shown in a new tab which can either be a focussed tab or a background tab depending on the options set by the user. The location of the newly opened tab can also be set by the user to be either next to the current tab or the last tab. The order of the search engines in the right-click menu can also be arranged. A list of 40 commonly used search engines has been added so that users can choose easily. If needed, the user can also add an option which has not been included. Premium features: Purchase a premium subscription to unlock the following features: - AI prompts: Get answers from AI: Summarize, rephrase, translate and so much more. - Customize prompts: Provide your own prompts to achieve exactly what you want. - Sub-menus: Group your search engines and AI prompts into sub-menus for better organization. - Multi-launch: Trigger multiple searches in separate tabs or multiple AI prompts simultaneously. You need at least Chrome version 88 to install and use this extension. If you like the extension, please don't forget to rate it 5-star (preferably!). In case of any issues/suggestions, leave a comment at the support and FAQ link provided below. Known issues: -------------------- 1. Sometimes, the extension icon reverts back from the magnifying glass to default Chrome extension icon. Disabling and enabling the extension again should bring it back. This is perhaps an issue with chrome.contextMenus.removeAll() method. 2. Favicons for search engines cannot be displayed in context menu currently as the contextMenus API does not allow it. 3. Taking settings from omnibar search configuration is not possible. Change-log: ---------------- 3.0.1: Handle old browsers where sidePanel is not supported. 3.00: Premium features added: Multilaunch, Submenus, AI Prompt support. Added new FB share/like button. 2.91: Fixed content security violations. Removed tweet option due to direct script loading. 2.90: Changed to use manifest version 2. 2.82: Drag and drop to rearrange options. 2.80: Minor code changes, Option for Google+ search added. 2.72: Bug fixed: Chrome restart no longer needed to apply settings. 2.7: Users can now use either 'TESTSEARCH' or '%s' to denote search terms. An existing option can now be disabled or deleted if not required. 0.9: Added the ability for enabling/disabling particular search engines. TOTALLY RUINED! This extension was one of my favourites, I have a backup of my search tools I would import for each new install on a web browser. Now my import is not working, and my custom searches refuse to work. This is a select and search tool. Why on earth do I need AI involvement? Y'all would put AI in a toaster just to say it has AI. There is no reason for me to prompt for anything with this tool! This is such an absurd use for AI. Not to mention you did not make the import backwards compatible! I am so furious that a clean install pushed this update!

After adding all the premium options in version 3, extension stopped working - it just disappeared from context menu altogether. Either developer completely broke it, or it is became impossible to use it for free. Now I'm really sad, because I was devoted user of "Context Menu Search" for years before today. Now I suddenly have to find alternative extension and somehow port my options there, which is not gonna be easy, because most alternative extensions use %s, not =TESTSEARCH in their options. Ruining perfect extension just to add premium options isn't cool. It's like selling good reputation for non existing money.

It stopped working. Update to get it working again: 1) Remove Extension 2) Add Extension.

This app doesn't seem to do anything. I was hoping to use this to restore the image search into the right-click menu.

try this one instead https://github.com/w3lifer/crx-context-menu-search

This should search within quotation marks. Otherwise we can not call it a context searcher because it will yield search results for all the words within the context separately and not like within quotation marks. Do that and get a five star.

No longer working. Used this for years and will update back to FIVE stars if it can be updated but right now, it's dropped to ZERO stars since it stopped functioning undoubtedly from another Chromium code update.

Sorry if I didn't contact the developer first, but I think people on Chromebooks (this one is a Toshiba 2) shud know that it never did install a right click option, which pretty much makes it worthless. After going to the trouble of weeding thru the options, in order to add 'DuckDuckGo' & 'StartPage' (aka ixquick). Neither showed up. big bummer. Great idea; poor execution.

It should let you search using the search engines you have "built-in" into Chrome. Now it has no use whatsoever to me.

I can not see the use of this extension with Chromes new functions? I simply highlight the text -> right click -> choose Google [highlighted word/meaning] and POOF I get the google results. Instead of just giving one search result (ex. IMDB) I get ALL googles hits, including IMDB. This app DOES NOT save me any time at all. Maybe before this function got implemented, but definitely not now.

It's a foolish decision to upgrade the AI functionality in an already mature extension app! Especially, it doesn't support the settings JSON from older versions. In the end, I even found that the author said, 'I did not expect users to use old settings in the new version.

working a few hours ago and now it has stopped and all my sites have gone?

★★☆☆☆2024-05-14

Worked well except: many of my searches had an ampersand (&) in them, which acted as an end-of-line marker, e.g. "Echo & The Bunnymen" searched for only "Echo." Note: no more ashutoshdwivedi.com - the URL has been parked since 2021.

Works smoothly, but an auto-popup menu would be good. Also some actions like Go to Url, Copy Selection.

¡ Do it !

It is useful, but it would be a good idea to have an option that recognizes the search engines added to the browser. I had about 20 in Chrome and I was forced to transfer one by one (name and link), it was tedious.

It works well. But it will be better if we can search in several links at the same click, i.e http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=TESTSEARCH; http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=TESTSEARCH in 1 line, will launch search on both links in separate tabs...

Really? Just in english? That's poor. It should be an "finger exercise" to ad an language option, based on international language files IN ANY Language. Think about it - it should be great and will grown up your usership. Also: i'd missed the possibilty to change the default-search and to unstack some of the search-engines by an option. I hope you will think about that too. But: THANKS for a nice App and all your work with.

Update 4 yrs later: Had to remove it. It kept randomly deleting all my configs. Donezo! Next! Previous: Missing one small thing to make it perfect; The ability to categorize searches into groups. i.e. Search Engines -> Google, Bing, etc. Images -> Google Images, Picasa, etc. News -> CNN, etc. Instead of having one, long list where they're all mixed together.

So close to what I'm looking for but so far. Why doesn't this add itself to the image context menu? When right clicking an image in chrome, you can select, search google for this image. It actually uploads it to the image search box. That same option for bing would be awesome.

I got here trying to find a replacement for "clickless menu" addon in Firefox. This extension is great but I miss something. Would it be possible to add an option so you just have to double-click on the word or select text, for the context menu to show up? instead of actually having to select it then right-click? That'd be an improvement! please!

Great App! But I have to add my search engines on other PCs once again which is very tiresome. Please, add a synchronization via Google account on Chrome!

Wish there was an option to inline all the searches into the context menu.
