Description

The serene creature floating near the surface is a Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). As a marine biologist, I find their ability to thrive in such varied conditions truly remarkable. While often associated with the deep ocean, they are a common sight in the sunlit, coastal waters where they spend their lives. The clear, dish-shaped bell is their signature feature, containing four conspicuous, ring-like gonads that are an unmistakable sign of this species. They propel themselves with a gentle, rhythmic pulsing, using their nearly invisible, hair-like tentacles to collect food from the water. This jellyfish's simple anatomy belies its immense ecological success, as it is one of the most widespread and well-adapted cnidarians in our oceans.
