Description

Soaring directly overhead against a dramatic, cloud-dappled blue sky is the Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis). The bird is captured in a powerful full-span flight posture, emphasizing its broad, pointed wings which are predominantly pale grey on the mantle, contrasting with the dark black primary tips. Its head and body are pure white, and the keen, dark eye is clearly visible, focused downwards. The most definitive field mark, which gives the species its name, is the black ring visible encircling the distal third of its stout, yellow bill. This upward-looking perspective captures the gulls mastery of the air and its role as an opportunistic and widespread scavenger across North America, often seen far inland as well as along coastlines.
