Description

Sniffing the ground intently, this stocky mammal is a Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu), also known as a Javelina. Despite its pig-like appearance, it is more closely related to other peccaries. Its coarse fur is a grizzled mix of grey, black, and brown, providing excellent camouflage in its arid and semi-arid habitats across the Americas. A distinctive band of lighter, yellowish-white hair encircles its neck, giving the species its common name. The peccary's elongated snout is well-adapted for rooting through leaf litter and soil in search of roots, tubers, and other food items. Its small, erect ears and tiny tail are characteristic features of this social animal, often found in small herds that forage and travel together.
